POAG
EXECUTIVE MINUTES - September 2005:
The
Executive Committee of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc.
held a meeting at 10 A. M., September 27, 2005, at the Peace Officers
Association of Georgia office, Reidsville, Georgia. Committee members
attending included President Gary Hill, Vice President Jimmy Jones,
Board Member Thomas A. Alley, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley, and
Executive Director Marion Conley. Board Member Mike Fordham is deployed
and was unable to attend. Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson was also
absent as was Chaplain Rick Lanford and Attorney Frank Childs Visitors
included: John Edwards.
Tattnall
County Probate Judge Gloria Dubberly swore in the above present
officers.
President
Gary Hill called the meeting to order.
Vice
President Jimmy Jones gave the invocation.
The Pledge
of Allegiance was led by President Gary Hill.
A motion
was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Thomas Alley and passed to approve
the minutes from August, 2005. After some questions were answered about
the financial report a motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by
Thomas Alley and passed to approve the financial report. Since all
convention expenses are not in yet, there could be no final accounting
of convention expenses.
The
possibility of a future meeting in Leesburg, Georgia was discussed since
the Officer of the Year nominee Sgt. Todd Beaver from Lee County
Sheriff’s Department’s representative to accept his award at the
convention was overlooked. The Committee felt we owed an apology to
Sgt. Beaver.
Since
funds had been sent ALL peace officers when hurricanes devasted the
State of Florida, a discussion ensued on sending funds to Louisana,
Alabama, Mississippi and Texas. Dr. Bobby Smith had volunteered to
accept responsibility for getting fund into the appropriate hands for
funds going into Louisiana. A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded
by John Conley and passed to send $1,000 for ALL peace officers helping
with hurricane devastation in Louisana. Expert opinion will be sought
on the needs of peace officers in the remaining three states. Based on
the needs of these three states, a motion was made by John Conley,
seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed to forward up to $1,000 for each
state based on the needs of each individual state. The needs will be
assessed by an expert from each state. It was further decided that once
an expert is found, POAG ask our Web Master to place on the web site
that any individual wishing to contribute to this fund may send their
contribution to the POAG office. A separate checking account and
accurate accounting will be kept of all funds received and disbursed.
The motion to have this project on the web site with the accounting
thereof was made by John Conley, seconded by Thomas Alley and passed.
An e-mail was discussed
that had been received from a former member. After discussing the
situation, it was felt by the Committee that this member apparently did
not have all the facts of the situation and that the office would
contact this person with further details.
John Conley brought
before the Committee a member whose membership had expired two days
prior to death. This person had been a member over twenty-five years.
John Conley made a motion which was seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed
to pay this benefit.
President Gary Hill
asked all that any correspondence written by any member of the Committee
pertaining to POAG, a copy be sent to the office. This will enable the
office to know what is going on at all times if calls are received
relevant to the matter.
A motion was made by
Thomas Alley, seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed to send Flemington
Presbyterian Church $350.00 and Methodist Home for Children and Youth
$350.00 as a token of appreciation for the services of Chaplains Rick
Lanford and Greg Loskoski.
President Gary Hill
asked that, if possible, we plan to choose a 2006 convention site at the
October meeting. President Hill will make some calls on a possible
speaker as will John Conley. The possibility of asking Southern Lawmen
to perform again at the convention for 2006 was discussed. The
Committee was in agreement that all would like to see 20 hours of
training provided at the convention. Hopefully this, as well as
training topics can be worked on with the GBI again providing the
training.
The PrePaid Legal
representative will be invited to attend the October meeting.
The next meeting was set
for October 11, 2005, 10 A. M., at the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office
Range and Training Center on Highway 1 South, Augusta, Georgia. (Map
