POAG
EXECUTIVE MINUTES - MAY 2008:
The Executive Committee of the Peace Officers’
Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10 A. M., May 19, 2008 at
Creekbank Club House on Georgia Power land at Lake Burton, Lakemont,
Georgia. Committee members attending included President Jimmy Jones,
Vice President Keith Glass, Board Members Mike Jones and Thomas Alley,
Secretary-Treasurer John Conley, Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson, and
Executive Director Marion Conley, Attorney Frank Childs and Chaplain
Rick Lanford were unable to attend. Former POAG president Mickey Pearce,
Morgan and Joyce Key, Pat and Billy Stone, W. L. Lovell, Sr., Bill
Cline, Mike Cline, Jimmy Yarbrough and Lenn Wood were visitors.
President Jimmy Jones called the meeting to order.
The invocation was given by Vice President Keith Glass.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by President Jimmy Jones.
A motion was made by Homer Bryson, seconded by Thomas Alley and passed
to approve the minutes from April, 2008. A motion was made by Mike
Jones, seconded by Keith Glass and passed to approve the financial
report from April, 2008.
The Committee discussed the convention. Marion Conley passed a rough
draft of the convention program out. President Jones reported the band
Loose Screws would be performing Monday night for $1,500.00 plus 2
rooms. He is attempting to secure corporate sponsors for this
performance. How much to give away at training was discussed. Keith
Glass made a motion to award $50.00 to each class. This motion was
seconded by Mike Jones and passed. John Conley made a motion to dedicate
the convention to Chatham County Sheriff Al St. Lawrence since this will
be his 50th year. This motion was seconded by Thomas Alley and also
passed. Homer Bryson made a motion which was seconded by Keith Glass to
ask Ocean Breeze D. J. to perform Tuesday night of the convention. This
motion passed.
Secretary Conley reported that POAG did eight Alcohol Free Proms this
year. This is the most we have ever done but according to all reports
all were very successful in that we could find no incidents of any
violations of the law in any of the areas where the events were
sponsored. Again, all were asked that if they knew any corporate
sponsors to let the office know and we would get in touch with them and
take the entire event from there.
Mike Callan from Public Safety Services, LLC had sent the new Royalty
contract for renewal with no changes. Based on our attorney’s advice
John Conley made a motion we sign the new contract. This motion was
seconded by Homer Bryson and passed.
Secretary Conley was happy to report that an additional $35,000 of POAG
money had been invested at 7.5%. This was done through Mike Hoffman.
Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson reported on the Indemnification bill
that everyone was interested in. Homer was happy to report that some
concessions had been made in the bill. No taxes would have to be paid on
funds received, there would be $100,000 paid out, POAG would give the
Governor a slate of names and the Governor would choose from that slate
for a Board Member to serve on the Commission and the Commission will
only hear appeals. Homer also stated that effective January 1, 2009 all
new State employees will be under a different retirement system.
President Jones reported there will be six pilot Tech POST Advisory
Schools and Board around the State. Augusta Tech seems confident they
will be one of these chosen. Apparently POAG will appoint someone to
these Boards the same as they have in the past with the other Advisory
Boards.
Marion Conley reported the present lease on the Pitney Bowes postage
machine is about to expire. After talking with the Pitney Bowes
representative they will update the machine for the same amount of money
and the same terms as the previous lease. Homer Bryson made a motion
which was seconded by Keith Glass to go with this proposition. The
motion passed.
President Jones had received an e-mail regarding recruiting for
international police positions. The Committee decided that President
Jones should get in touch with this individual and offer him the
opportunity to either purchase an ad in “The Georgia Peace Officer” or
be an exhibitor at the convention. Jimmy agreed to handle this.
Marion reported a unique situation that had occurred in the office. An
individual had resigned from a sheriff’s office to run for sheriff in
another county. He is presently not a member of POAG nor is he presently
in law enforcement. However, he wants to come to the convention to
obtain the 20 hours of POST training. After some discussion it was
decided to offer him an Associate membership, and then he will be a
member enabling him to attend the convention and obtain the training.
This will be run by our Attorney. If he should be successful in his bid
for sheriff he can then swap his Associate card for an Active voting
card.
Homer volunteered to get the office the names and addresses of the
Georgia Power officials so they can be thanked for the wonderful and
beautiful meeting place and excellent meal provided us for the meeting.
President Jones thanks all the District Directors that were in
attendance.
The June meeting was called by President Jones for June 23, 2008, 10 A.
M., at the Jekyll Oceanfront Resort. This will enable us to work out any
problems concerning the convention ahead of time.
A motion was made by Homer Bryson to adjourn. The motion was seconded by
Keith Glass. Accordingly, the meeting was adjourned.
