POAG EXECUTIVE MINUTES - MAY 2005

The Executive Committee of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10:00 A. M., May 26, 2005, at the home of Morgan and Joyce Key, Conyers, Georgia.   Committee members attending included President Keith Moran, Vice President Gary W. Hill, Board Member Jimmy Jones,  Secretary-Treasurer John Conley, Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson and Executive Director Marion Conley.  Vice President Mike Fordham is deployed  and was unable to attend.  Attorney Frank Childs and Chaplain Rick Lanford were also unable to attend. Visitors included: Terry and Kim Evans, Rockdale County Sheriff Thomas J. (Jeff) Wigington, Mickey Pearce and Conyers Chief of Police David Cathcart, Bobby Carter, Morgan and Joyce Key.

President Keith Moran called the meeting to order and welcomed all in attendance.

Board Member Jimmy Jones gave the invocation.

President Moran led the Pledge of Allegiance.

A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded Homer Bryson and passed to approve the financial reports from March and April and the minutes from April, 2005.

Several e-mails received by the office were discussed with no action being the course of action decided to be taken.  The writer was obviously much uninformed on the subject and it was decided there was no way we could win a battle of words.  One of the e-mails had already been satisfactorily settled.

A fantastic offer of 4 days/3 nights at Disney/Epcot for $139.00 for 2 adults and 3 children had been received by the office.  The offer also included a proposition whereby when ten people took advantage of the offer, the company would give POAG one free trip.  This trip could be given as a door prize at the convention.  The Committee decided to ask Callan Publishing to run this offer in “The Georgia Peace Officer” and also post the offer on a board at the convention.  A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Homer Bryson and passed to take advantage of this wonderful offer.

The offer received from Genworth Financial last month was again discussed.  Some investigation of Genworth and GE Mortgage had been done with nothing negative being discovered about either company.  John Conley will talk further with Genworth and go from there.  If necessary, he will consult with Attorney Frank Childs about the deal.

While John and Marion were attending a FAM tour of Athens, Georgia recently an offer was presented them from The Georgia Department of Community Affairs that would be of possible tremendous value to our younger officers.  The Department would give a new homebuyer (or one that had not purchased a home in the last three years) $7,500.00 at zero percent interest.  The funds would not have to be repaid until the home was sold.  John Conley made a motion, seconded by Jimmy Jones to ask Callan Publishing to also print this information in “The Georgia Peace Officer” so that our membership would be aware of this offer and possibly avail themselves of the opportunity to utilize the offer.

Secretary Conley asks that a special membership card be printed for our Chaplains.  We would order bullions for our primary chaplains.  The Committee decided to pursue this project.

The convention was again discussed.  The Committee was in total agreement on dedicating the convention to an individual who has been one of POAG’s most avid supporters through the years.  It was decided to reveal this person’s identity at a later date.  John Conley made a motion, which motion was seconded by Gary Hill and passed to allow the Ladies Auxiliary’s request for $225.00 for corsages and flowers and $657.83 to two meals at the convention.

The topic of life memberships was discussed.  Gary Hill suggested a honorary membership for Dr. Bobby Smith and Ellis Wood, Jimmy Jones suggested a honorary membership for Lane Packing Company, John Conley suggested a honorary membership for State Representative Terry Barnard and Keith Moran suggested a honorary membership for Bill Goodwin.  A motion was made by Homer Bryson, seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed to accept these Associate life memberships.

Active Life memberships were then discussed.  Jimmy Jones suggested a life membership for Keith Moran, Homer Bryson suggested a life membership for Ronnie Lynn, Keith Moran suggested a life membership for Bobby Carter and John Conley suggested a life membership for Joyce Key.  A motion was made by Homer Bryson, seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed to accept these Active Life Memberships.

President Moran, on behalf of the entire Committee thanked Morgan and Joyce Key for welcoming the Committee into their home and furnishing them lunch.

The June meeting was called for Friday, June 24, 2005, 10 A M. at the Peach County Courthouse, Fort Valley, Georgia.  The meeting that was originally scheduled to occur in Athens had to be cancelled.

A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Homer Bryson to adjourn.  Accordingly, the meeting was adjourned for lunch.
