EXECUTIVE MINUTES - MAY 2003
The
Executive Committee of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc.
held a meeting at 4 P. M., May 9, 2003, at the Jekyll Inn, Jekyll Island,
Georgia. Committee members attending included President Harry Colbert,
III, Vice President Homer Bryson, Board Member Keith Moran,
Secretary-Treasurer John Conley, Legislative Chairman Bob Brown, and
Executive Director Marion Conley. Board Member Gary Hill, Attorney Frank
Childs and Chaplain Jimmy Waters were unable to attend. Visitors included
Ken Suddeth, Joyce and Morgan Key.
The meeting
was called to order and a welcome given all in attendance by President
Colbert. Vice President Homer Bryson gave the invocation.
The minutes
from April and the financial report from March, 2003 were approved upon a
motion from Bob Brown. The motion was seconded by Keith Moran and passed.
Marion Conley stated there was no financial report for April, 2003 yet
awaiting a bank statement on the fundraising project from Minnesota.
Vice President
Homer Bryson reported he is continuing to work on acquiring a car to be
given away for a hole in one on a part three at the convention golf
tournament. He also reported he had met with a corporate sponsor and feels
confident that the company will be able to sponsor Dr. Bobby Smith’s
presentation on Monday afternoon of the convention.
Secretary-Treasurer John Conley reported he and Mr. Paul DeLoach with Miller
Brewing were to meet with the University of Georgia person next Tuesday in
connection with an alcohol free school function.
The convention
program was gone over with a few changes made in same.
Board Member
Gary Hill had contacted Secretary Conley and reported he had the simulators
for the convention lined up and Legislative Chairman Bob Brown reported the
“Shoot, Don’t Shoot” simulator was lined up.
A discussion
ensued on whether to give $100 an hour during training. Training this year
has been increased from 12 hours to 16 hours. Ultimately a motion was made
by Homer Bryson, seconded by John Conley to award $100 an hour during all
training EXCEPT the four hours on Monday afternoon during Dr. Smith’s
presentation. This would keep from interrupting Dr. Smith’s talk and also
keep the financial outgo the same as in past years. The motion passed.
A discussion
of Honorary Life Memberships followed. Bill Jones, III of Sea Island
Company, Kenny Fussell of Fussell Bonding, and Danny Dubberly, State Court
Judge of Tattnall County were nominated by Bob Brown. This motion was
seconded by Keith Moran and passed. Harry Colbert reserved the right to
nominate one or two individuals with Pactiv Corporation who will be
sponsoring a convention event.
A discussion ensued on
Active Life Memberships. A motion was made by Bob Brown, seconded by Homer
Bryson and passed to award retired Dougherty County Police Chief William R.
(Bill) Kicklighter an active life membership. Keith Moran made a motion
which was seconded by Bob Brown and passed to award Retired U. S. Deputy
Marshal Walter Caldwell an active life membership. John Conley made a
motion, seconded by Harry Colbert and passed to award Appling County Sheriff
Benny DeLoach an active life membership.
Homer Bryson reported he had
given telephone numbers to the Camden County Sheriff regarding Universal
Connect and also had given Mr. John Thompson of Universal Connect the phone
number for Camden County Sheriff so they could communicate on this project.
The June
meeting was set for June 12 2003, 10 A. M. in Harry Colbert’s office,
Higgins Building, Macon, Georgia.
John Conley made a motion to
adjourn the meeting and go into Executive Session. This motion was seconded
by Bob Brown and passed.
President
Colbert adjourned the meeting. |
