POAG EXECUTIVE MINUTES -
March 2006:
The Executive Committee of the Peace
Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10 A. M., March
10, 2006, at the Georgia State Patrol Post in Statesboro, Georgia.
Committee members attending included President Gary Hill, Vice President
Jimmy Jones, Board Member Thomas Alley, Legislative Chairman Homer
Bryson, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley, and Executive Director Marion
Conley. Board Member Mike Fordham, Attorney Frank Childs and Chaplain
Rick Lanford were unable to attend. Visitors included Charles Byrd.
President Gary Hill gave the invocation and led the Pledge of
Allegiance.
A motion was made by Homer Bryson, seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed to
approve the minutes of the January and February, 2006 meetings. Homer
also made a motion, which was seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed to
approve the financial reports from January and February, 2006.
Terry Lee O’Neal of Robins Federal Insurance Agency was introduced. Mr.
O’Neal represents Auto Owners Insurance and gave a short but informative
presentation on how our membership could possibly save 5-12% on home,
auto, boat, mobile home and other types of insurance. If the Committee
decides to make this plan available to the membership, Mr. O’Neal agreed
that his company would pay the expense of mailing the information to our
membership (without our furnishing him our mailing list) and he will
take an ad in “The Georgia Peace Officer”. Our Associate members would
also qualify for these discounts. For a person to get this discount they
would have to provide the company a copy of their POAG membership card.
DJ Mike McDaniel cannot come to the convention so it was decided to ask
DJ John Edwards to perform Sunday and Tuesday nights.
A discussion ensued on who would prepare and serve the cold cut luncheon
Tuesday. Homer will check with Past President Keith Moran and see if one
of his previous helpers could do this. If he could not do so, perhaps
member Bobby Rowland would know someone that could help with the
project.
President Gary Hill will write for permission to use the shooting
simulator. However, Gary reported the driving simulator is torn up and
will not be available. Homer Bryson will also seek the Department of
Natural Resources shooting simulator.
Marion Conley reported the Johnny Robertson scholarship will be
forthcoming and will be available for this year’s convention.
There was a discussion on the hours of registration necessary for
Saturday and
Sunday since training will be held beginning
at 8 A. M. on Sunday this year. Marion agreed she would register delegates
Saturday from 3-5 P.M. and would begin Sunday morning at 7 A. M. until
necessary to get the ones going to training registered. It was decided that
it probably would not be necessary for anyone but Marion to do these hours
of registration Saturday and Sunday morning. All registration workers will
be needed Sunday afternoon and then we will stagger workers Monday and
Tuesday since registration is so slow.
President Hill reported we had received $5,000 from Planters Telephone
Foundation. Since they served Effingham County, they wished these funds to
go to Effingham County High School and South Effingham County High School.
Gary will coordinate the events with the schools. Gary also reported a
beverage company from Richmond County is still very interested in
participating in the program.
A motion was made by John Conley, seconded by Homer Bryson and passed to go
into Executive Session. After a brief session, a motion was made by John
Conley, seconded by Homer Bryson and passed to come out of Executive
Session.
The President reminded all of the April golf tournament April 10, 2006 at
Oakview Golf and Country Club, Hartley Bridge Road, Macon, Georgia. The
Executive Committee meeting will be the following day at the Pavilion at
Claystone at Lake Tobesofkee. Lodging accommodations will be available at
the Holiday Inn, I-475 and U. S. 80 for $63.00 a night. The telephone number
for the Holiday Inn is 478-788-0120 and the contact person is Ms.
Crutchfield.
