EXECUTIVE MINUTES - June 2008:
The Executive Committee of the
Peace Officers Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10 A.M.,
June 23, 2008, at the Jekyll Oceanfront Resort, Jekyll Island, Georgia.
Committee members attending included President Jimmy Jones, Vice
President Keith Glass, Board Members Mike Jones and Thomas Alley,
Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley, and
Executive Director Marion Conley. Attorney Frank Childs and Chaplain
Rick Lanford were unable to attend. Visitors were Past President Mickey
Pearce and Stephen B. Adams.
President Jimmy Jones called the meeting to order.
Board Member Mike Jones gave the invocation. The President led the
Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.
A motion was made by Homer Bryson, seconded by Mike Jones and passed to
approve the minutes of the May, 2008 meeting. The financial statement
from June was approved upon a motion from Mike Jones and a second from
Thomas Alley.
The Committee met with Holly and Erika from the Jekyll Oceanfront Resort
to “fine tune” the agenda of the convention. The Committee decided to
feed 50 at each of the ladies auxiliary functions. The Committee also
decided to feed 60 at the Old Timers breakfast at a cost of $8.45 per
person. The menu will basically be the same as last year with the
addition of biscuits and gravy. The balance of the program was gone over
with a few minor changes.
After a discussion on how difficult it has been to find a convention
site that our members could afford the room rates, we could cook in the
parking lot etc., Homer Bryon made a motion which was seconded by Thomas
Alley to ask our Attorney to prepare a resolution to introduce at the
convention changing the Constitution so that we may go anywhere anytime
for a convention. This motion passed.
A proposal by Mike Hoffman and Debra Russell representing Prudential on
long term care will be introduced at the convention. The proposal will
include a discount for POAG members.
An e-mail had been received and sent each Committee person from
T-Mobile. Keith Glass made a motion which was seconded by Thomas Alley
and passed to table this proposal to offer T-Mobile to our membership.
Alliance Technologies had contacted the office with a proposal to update
an antiquated computer membership record. However, the record would be
on the web site and each member would have access to their own record,
could change their own record, and would pay on-line. The program would
cost between $3,500 and $7,000. The Committee decided to table making a
decision on this program. Many of our members would not have computer
capability and many of our members would not know how to operate the
computer.
The choosing of Life members was the next topic of discussion. After a
brief discussion, Keith Glass made a motion to nominate Hugh McCullough,
State Court Judge of Tattnall County, Roy Fickling of Fickling and
Company in Macon, Devin Strickland who has furnished us shrimp for years
and Georgia Supreme Court Justice Robert Benham for Honorary Life
Memberships. This motion was seconded by Thomas Alley and passed.
After a brief discussion on Active Life Memberships John Conley made a
motion that Active Life Memberships be awarded to Gordon Lowe with
Georgia Emergency Management (Homeland Security), Metter, Tommy Smoak,
Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Savannah, Retired POST Council Employee
Daniel (Danny) S. Ray, Perry, and President Jimmy Jones, Investigator
with Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, Fort Valley.
This motion was seconded by Mike Jones and passed.
A discussion ensued on completing the open POAG position on the Academy
Advisory Boards. Keith Glass made a motion, seconded by John Conley and
passed to appoint Andy Fields and Patricia Champion to the Augusta
Regional Academy. Homer Bryson made a motion which was seconded by John
Conley and passed to appoint Mitchell N. Oliver, Jr. to the Columbus
Advisory Board.
The bid sheet for motels to complete to offer to host a convention was
reviewed by the Committee and updated.
A childs’information program that is sponsored by Masonic Lodges
throughout Georgia was discussed by Keith Glass. This information, in
turn, is given to the parents. It was thought that perhaps at some point
in the future POAG could partner with the Masonic Lodges in sponsoring
one of these events.
Jimmy Jones reminded all of the cell phones for soldiers that will be
collected at the convention. These cell phones will be collected for
calling cards for the soldiers. Also, the chargers need to accompany the
phones.
Stephen B. Adams, Captain with the Department of Natural Resources
announced he will be running for the position of Board Member.
President Jones called the July meeting for July 25, 2008, 10 A. M. in
Reidsville, Georgia All will be notified of the location. The office
will be completely cluttered with packed boxes getting ready for the
convention so it cannot be held at the office.
A motion was made by Homer Bryson to adjourn. Mike Jones seconded the
motion and accordingly the meeting was adjourned. |
