approve the minutes of the May, 2006 meeting. The financial statement
from May was approved upon a motion from Homer Bryson and a second from
Jimmy Jones.
The discussion that has been ongoing with Webster University officials
concerning Webster University possibly offering our membership the
ability to pursue their Masters Degree on-line was relayed to the
committee. Further discussions had been held between Webster officials
and President Gary Hill, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley and Director
Conley. The Committee was asked to hand our surveys and return them to
the office on this matter.
The convention program was thoroughly discussed and a few changes made.
The ladies auxiliary asked for a continental breakfast for 30 as a cost
of $10.95 per person. Permission was for the ladies to order corsages
and head table arrangements. Ladies Auxiliary President Shirley Alley
had asked for funds for door prizes, if possible. A motion was made by
John Conley, seconded Jimmy Jones and passed to write a check for
$250.00 to Mrs. Alley to be used to purchase door prizes. The ladies
were also requesting a trip to River Street at a possible cost of
$400.00 for transportation cost. John however felt the possibly he could
get the transportation furnished. A full breakfast for Tuesday morning
for 30 ladies will be furnished at a cost of $11.95 per lady. The ladies
plan to tour Tybee Island at a cost of $10.00 per lady. Bill Thomas of
Big Bad Wolf Barbecue will be charging $4,000 for the two meals plus two
rooms for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights. We are to send ½ deposit to
Mr. Thomas now. A motion was made by Thomas Alley, seconded by Homer
Bryson authorizing John Conley to pay all convention expenses.
President Gary Hill informed the Committee that Effingham County
informed him the package was in the mail on the Alcohol Free Prom Night.
For many years, the office has been experiencing a problem of an officer
retiring, staying out of the Association many years and then rejoining.
The office is faced with the problem of having to issue the person and
active voting card. A lengthy discussion ensued on how we could remedy
the problem in fairness to all members. The possibility of a resolution
being introduced at the convention in September was considered. The
wording of the resolution could possibly be: Anyone choosing to not be a
member for five (5) continuous years cannot rejoin as an active voting
member unless they are currently employed in law enforcement. This idea
was tables for further consideration.
The Committee discussed the problem that will arise this year at the
convention of our eating area being a public area. IT WAS DECIDED TO ASK
STRICT PARTICIPATION FROM OUR MEMBERSHIP IN WEARING THEIR REGISTRATION
BADGES TO ALL MEAL FUNCTIONS. THIS WOULD KEEP US FROM HAVING TO PAY FOR
JOE DOE’S MEALS. We plan to have many signs announcing this.
Homer gave a report on SB236, which gives state dependents the right to
retain State health insurance upon the death of the employee. Homer will
contact Bill Hudgens’ office to see if we can get this bill amended to
include all spouses of officers killed in the line of duty throughout
the state.
President Hill brought before the Committee the need for a power point
presentation. Homer volunteered to work on this project.
The Callan magazine contract was discussed. A motion was made by Jimmy
Jones, seconded by Thomas Alley and passed to approve the contract as
discussed with Frank Childs via telephone previously that morning. This
contract will be for a one-year period.
John Conley had been approached by a representative from New York Life
Insurance with a supplement to Medicare. However, John will look further
into this matter as there were many unclear points.
The July meeting was called fro July 14, 2006, 9 A.M., Vidalia City
Hall, 114 Jackson Street, Vidalia, Georgia.
A motion was made by John Conley to adjourn. This motion was seconded by
Homer Bryson and passed. |
