A motion was made by Bob Brown, seconded by Keith Moran and passed to approve the minutes and financial report form May, 2002.
An interesting presentation was given by Will Zschiesche with The National Automobile Association (NAA). This program contains many benefits that would be of interest to all our membership. POAG would receive 10% on all new memberships as well as renewal memberships. It was pointed out that the legal fee reimbursement clause would cover an officer in the line of duty. Mr. Zschiesche along with his associate, Travis Lumpkin was invited to speak briefly at the convention and also have a table to display this program to all convention delegates. Attorney Frank Childs seemed to have no problems with the program but recommended we have a contract with the Company so that we could withdraw from the program if this became the desire of POAG at some point. A discussion by the Committee followed on the pros and cons of the program. Finally, a motion was made by Bob Brown, seconded by John Conley and passed to recommend this program to our membership. NAA will draw a contract for Attorney Frank Childs’ approval.
President Wayne Avery was happy to present a check for $300 from Su and Bo Lee dba as Food Center #1 in Macon. This will sponsor the Old Timers Breakfast at the convention.
Some of the POST instructors at the regional academies had inquired at the office about their eligibility to participate in the POA&B Fund. Since Bob Carter, Secretary-
Treasurer of the Fund was present Secretary Conley asked Mr. Carter about this situation. We learned that a requirement of their job description must require that they be POST certified before they could be eligible for possible membership in the Fund.
The office had received a letter from Northeast Georgia Police Academy Director Andy Garrison asking that Lt. Avery Niles with Hall County Sheriff’s Department be appointed to a vacant seat on the their Board. Secretary Conley made a motion that this request be granted upon Lt. Niles joining POAG as a member. This motion was seconded by Harry Colbert and passed.
The convention was discussed in great detail. Attorney Frank Childs had graciously agreed to invite The Honorable Max Wood, U. S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia to be the keynote speaker. The invitation had been accepted. Vice President Colbert reported that Barrington Hall Golf Course would be the site of the golf tournament this year. Jimmy Jones volunteered to ask Lane Packing Company of Fort Valley if they would furnish some peace ice cream for the convention. The office will furnish each Committee person a page listing the needs for the deli lunch on Tuesday. Each Committee person, in turn, will volunteer to attempt to get an item or items on this list donated. This would prohibit one store from being “hit so hard” for the meal. Prices for a barbeque chicken meal on Tuesday night were presented by President Avery. After a brief discussion, a motion was made by Bob Brown, seconded by Harry Colbert to ask Satterfield’s to cater this meal of barbeque chicken, slaw, potato salad, 3 deserts, tea, water, bread and set-ups for $8.75 per person.
Jimmy Jones offered for Celebration to perform Monday and Tuesday night at a cost of $2,800 for both nights with no lodging needed. A motion was made by Bob Brown, seconded by Keith Moran and passed to accept this proposal.
A motion was made by John Conley and seconded by Bob Brown to allow Steve White with Laser Shot to have a display space with his “Shoot-Don’t Shoot” exhibit. The motion passed.
A decision was made to allow Al Burnsed with Prepaid Legal to have booth to offer this service to any who wished to discuss this type of service with Mr. Burnsed.
Ms. Julie Rowland with Holiday Inn Conference Center came into the meeting and answered several questions the Committee had. She agreed for us to cook and eat in the parking lot for three meals. She emphatically stated no coolers at the dances.
Harry Colbert was happy to report the Bibb County Sheriff’s Department would again furnish a low country boil Monday night of the convention.
