EXECUTIVE MINUTES - July 2005:
The Executive Committee
of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at
10:00 A. M., July 22, 2005, at the Jekyll Island Oceanfront Resort,
Jekyll Island, Georgia. Committee members attending included President
Keith Moran, Vice President Gary W. Hill, Board Member Jimmy Jones,
Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley,
Attorney Frank Childs and Executive Director Marion Conley. Vice
President Mike Fordham is deployed and was unable to attend. Chaplain
Rick Lanford were also unable to attend. Visitors included: Thomas A.
Alley.
President Keith Moran
called the meeting to order.
Vice President Gary Hill
gave the invocation.
A motion was made by
Homer Bryson, seconded by Gary Hill and passed to approve the minutes
and financial report from June, 2005.
Secretary John Conley
reported the death of a member who had been a member for many many
years, had died with the grace period lapsed by only 6 days. The member
had been in intensive care for the past 30 days. John Conley made a
motion, which was seconded by Homer Bryson to pay this death benefit.
The motion passed.
Legislative Chairman
Homer Bryson has been communicating with someone about a business’
willingness to donate vest at no cost to law enforcement. Homer had
asked that POAG be allowed to be the “middle man” in the transaction”.
The Committee discussed that perhaps a person being a member of POAG and
a need being present for the officer to receive the free vest. This
discussion will be ongoing.
Amy Rabon with the Jekyll
Oceanfront Resort was present and thoroughly went over the program with
us, explaining where each scheduled event would occur. A motion was
made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Homer Bryson and passed to pay the
Resort $500.00 (total) room rental for the three night’s dances. Amy
quoted us a price $7.95 per person for the Old Timers Breakfast (50
meals were asked to be prepared), $11.29 per person for the ladies
auxiliary Monday meal based on 35 meals and $7.51 per person for the
ladies auxiliary Tuesday meal based on 35 meals. A motion was made by
Gary Hill, seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed authorizing the payment of
all convention expenses.
President Moran reminded
all the next meeting would be on Saturday, at 4 P. M., August 20, 2005
at the Jekyll Oceanfront Resort in the Crane Room.
The choice of the
“Officer of the Year” was discussed. After much discussion, because
Seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed to award the “Officer of the Year for
Valor” to Cherokee County Deputy Patrick Neal. There were no
nominations for Meritorious Service.
The task of selecting a winner of the
Jimmy Waters Scholarship was the next item on the agenda. This also was
a most difficult task because of the worthy applicants. Finally, Jimmy
Jones made a motion, seconded by Gary Hill and passed to award the
$1,000 scholarship to Christina Angelina Whitaker of Gainesville,
Georgia. A motion was then made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by John Conley
and passed to award Tiffani Elizabeth Harcrow of Leesburg, Georgia a
$500.00 scholarship. Gary Hill then made a motion, which was seconded
by Jimmy Jones and passed to award Kathryn Marie Jacobs a $500.00
scholarship. Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson abstained from all
proceedings due to his stepdaughter being an applicant.
Attorney Frank Childs discussed with
the Committee the question that has arisen over whether forfeited drug
funds can be used to pay POAG dues. Frank cautioned us that we tell all
peoples that there is a split opinion on this issue and suggest to any
agency or department asking us if they may do so that they may wish to
contact their own attorney about the problem.
It was decided to adjourn to lunch
there at the Resort. |
