POAG EXECUTIVE MINUTES - February
2008:
The
Executive Committee of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc.
held a meeting at 6 P. M., February 18, 2008 at Red Roof Inn, Morrow,
Georgia. Committee members attending included President Jimmy Jones,
Vice President Keith Glass, Board Members Mike Jones and Thomas Alley,
Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley and
Executive Director Marion Conley. Attorney Frank Childs and Chaplain
Rick Lanford were unable to attend. Bobby Carter was a visitor.
President Jimmy Jones called the meeting to order.
Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson gave the invocation.
A motion was made by Homer Bryson, seconded by Thomas Alley and passed
to approve the minutes from January, 2008. A motion was made by Thomas
Alley, seconded by Homer Bryson and passed to approve the financial
reports from December, 2007 and January, 2008.
The Committee discussed the convention. A motion was made by Keith
Glass, seconded by Thomas Alley and passed that we contract with the
Southern Lawmen to perform Sunday night of the convention, Loose Screws
Monday night (this motion was contingent on being able to obtain a
suitable contract with this band) and a D.J. Tuesday night of the
convention. It was decided to endeavor to obtain meal contracts for
feeding 400 people Monday night, 400 Tuesday for lunch and 250 Tuesday
night. Registration fees were discussed. Homer Bryson made a motion,
this motion being seconded by Mike Jones and passed setting registration
fees the same as last year at $20 per person EXCEPT for those persons
attending training. That person attending training will pay AN
ADDITIONAL $20. These persons will be given a ribbon that will identify
them as a person going to training. Vendor fees were then discussed.
John Conley made a motion which was seconded by Homer Bryson and passed
to set vendor fees at $100 a day to include electricity. A vendor must
pre-register at least ten (10) days prior to the convention. The vendors
will be on a first come, first serve basis because of limited space.
Secretary Conley brought before the Committee an idea of furnishing all
who renew or join a sticker when their new membership card is sent back
to them. A motion was made by Keith Glass to implement this policy
immediately. The motion was seconded by Homer Bryson and carried.
All were reminded that the next magazine deadline is March 7th.
Marion Conley was happy to report that Planters Telephone had sent the
Association a check for $10,000 for the two scholarships and $1,500.00
help on a meal at the convention.
John Conley and Thomas Alley were happy to report that $2,500.00 had
been given to Jefferson County High School for their Alcohol Free Prom.
This project is being sponsored by Jefferson EMC.
Thomas Alley reported having talked with Ms. Mamie McAbee in Augusta
about Augusta possibly hosting a convention. Mr. Alley will get back
with Ms. McAbee about possibly hosting a March meeting of the Committee.
Bobby Carter of POA&B Fund graciously furnished the Committee some
updated figures on the Fund. He asked for our help in opposing Senate
Bills 199, 370, and 416. These are all Divestment Bills. We agree with
Mr. Carter that he is in the business of making money not watching what
the State Department should be watching.
A motion was made by John Conley, seconded by Mike Jones and passed to
pay for dinner and breakfast for all in attendance.
It was decided to wait on a date for the March meeting until Homer can
talk with the Augusta Convention Bureau.
Keith Glass made a motion to adjourn, which was seconded by Mike Jones.
Accordingly, the meeting was adjourned.
