POAG EXECUTIVE MINUTES -
December 2004:
The Executive Committee of the Peace
Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10 A. M., December
21, 2004, at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, Macon, Georgia.
Committee members attending included President Keith Moran, Vice President
Gary W. Hill, Board Members Jimmy Jones and Mike Fordham, Legislative
Chairman Homer Bryson, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley, Executive Director
Marion Conley, and Chaplain Rick Lanford. Attorney Frank Childs was unable
to attend. Visitors included: Thomas A. Alley, Ken Suddeth, Dottie Harden,
Charlotte Hardy, Mickey Pearce, Debra Gilman, Alan Everidge and Ed Richards.
President Keith Moran called the meeting to order and welcomed all in
attendance. A quotation of scripture and invocation were given by Chaplain
Rick Lanford with the Pledge of Allegiance being led by President Moran.
Homer Bryson made a motion, which was seconded by Jimmy Jones to approve the
minutes and financial report from November, 2004. The motion passed.
Rev. (Daddy) Rick Lanford thanked the Association for the $500.00
contribution given last month to the Methodist Home for Children and Youth.
He stated all the funds went to buy gifts for the children.
Secretary John Conley reported that GBI SAC John Edwards quoted a price of
$400.00 for his son to act as DJ for one night of the convention. President
Moran had received a price of $575.00 for a musical group to perform. It was
decided to secure additional prices during the following month and report
back at the January meeting.
A lengthy discussion took place on possible training for the convention.
Since Board Member Mike Fordham and the GBI will be handling training again,
notes were made by Mike on these suggestions. A possible defensive driving
course for retired delegates was discussed. This would help lower their
insurance premiums. Also, a need to provide courses during the convention
that the smaller departments would not have access to acquiring was
discussed.
It was decided to hold the golf tournament on Monday at 8 A. M. This should
enable the players to be through by 1 P. M. in order to hear Dr. Smith’s
talk. The 5K run will be held at 5:30 P. M., Sunday beginning outside the
headquarters with the pistol match to be scheduled Monday at 9 A. M. at the
Glynn County Police Department firing range.
President Moran again welcomed the District Directors in attendance and
notified all that Ed Richards from Columbus will be the alternate District
Director for the Columbus District and Alan Everidge will be the alternate
District Director for the Macon District.
President Moran has diligently worked on rewording the present “Facts”
brochure provided by the Association. A copy of his efforts along with the
present brochure were provided all Committee persons. They were asked to
provide input in this new brochure by the next meeting.
An issue of a previous member who did not have ten years of the previous
twelve years prior to retiring as an active member was discussed. He had
virtually joined at a convention and then dropped his membership until the
convention came back to this home town. President Moran stated that this
member needed to voice his complaint in writing to the Committee as a whole.
The Committee would then make a decision on the matter.
Secretary Conley reported that a little over $9,000.00 remained in the joint
POAG and Miller Brewing account designated for Alcohol Free Prom night.
Secretary Conley’s suggestion was that each Committee person return to the
next meeting with the name or a school or schools they wished to see
participate again in the Alcohol Free prom night program. The guidelines
would virtually be the same as they were in 2003.
The January meeting was set for January 19, 2005, 10 A. M., Pooler Police
Department.
A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Homer Bryson and passed to
adjourn the meeting to lunch, courtesy of Daddy Rick and the Methodist Home
for Children and Youth.
