POAG EXECUTIVE MINUTES -
December 2001:
The Executive Committee of the Peace
Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10 A. M., December
4, 2001 at the office of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc.,
Reidsville, Georgia. Committee members attending included President Wayne
Avery, Board Member Keith Moran, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley,
Legislative Chairman Bob Brown, Public Relations Director Ken Suddeth and
Executive Director Marion Conley. Vice President Harry Colbert, Board
Member Homer Bryson, Attorney Frank Childs and Chaplain Jimmy Waters were
unable to attend. Visitors included: Bill Hitchens and Jimmy Sims.
The meeting
was called to order and a welcome given to all in attendance by President
Wayne Avery. Bob Brown gave the invocation. The Pledge of Allegiance
was led by President Avery.
A motion was
made by Bob Brown and seconded by Keith Moran to approve the minutes and
financial report from November, 2001. The motion passed. A copy of the
convention expenditures was affixed to the financial report and approved as
well.
John Conley
and Keith Moran gave a report on the ten references furnished the office by
Mike Callan. These references employed Mike and one of his subsidiary
companies as a telemarketer. Keith reported that Mr. Bill Lynn, Executive
Director of Idaho Sheriff’s Association reported he had probably six
complaints a year but they were always handled beautifully by Mike and to
the satisfaction of the caller. John reported that of the places he
contacted reported they had two firms telemarketing. One company they had
nothing but problems with while Mike Callan’s company was no problem. Some
of the called individuals even relayed to John that on occasion Mike has
actually fired someone when a complaint was received. No one in any of the
ten had any derogatory remarks about Mike Callan and his telemarketers.
Board Member
Keith Moran stated he would like to know which office of Callan’s would
actually be doing the telemarketing.
The Committee
was in complete agreement that all funds received from a telemarketing
effort would go to pay death benefits.
After much
discussion Bob Brown made a motion, which was seconded by Keith Moran and
passed to proceed with telemarketing with Mike Callan. The Committee was in
agreement with Mike’s suggestion that a letter go out from the office to
each Chief and each Sheriff in the state making them aware of this
undertaking. President Avery stated he would prepare an article for the
magazine explaining to the membership the decision that was reached by this
Committee. In order to continue the payment of the large number of death
payments, some source of additional revenue had to be sought and utilized.
After exploring any and every conceivable avenue of additional revenue,
telemarketing was the only source of additional income the Committee thought
was a viable source.
We will ask the Association
Attorney Frank Childs to get with Mike Callan and work out the terms of a
contract on the telemarketing.
The convention expenses of the 2001
convention were gone over. Here again, no one was able to see where we
could possibly cut those expenses any more than they were already being
cut.
Training for the 2002
convention in Macon was discussed. It was suggested that we actively begin
a search for someone to handle the training that will be of interest to our
diversified group of people. Keith Moran thought perhaps he knew of someone
and would endeavor to contact that person.
A motion was made by Bob
Brown, seconded by Keith Moran and passed to adjourn to lunch prepared by
Marion Conley.
The January meeting was
scheduled for 10 A. M., January 22, 2002 in the Piedmont Room, Holiday Inn,
I-75 and Arkwright Road, Macon, Georgia.
