POAG EXECUTIVE MINUTES - August 2006:

The Executive Committee of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10 A. M., August 25, 2006, at the Ocean Plaza Beach Resort Tybee Island, Georgia. Committee members attending included President Gary Hill, Vice President Jimmy Jones, Board Member Thomas Alley, Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley, and Executive Director Marion Conley. Board Member Mike Fordham, Attorney Frank Childs and Chaplain Rick Lanford were unable to attend. Visitors included Debbie Shaw, John Heinen, Tommy Smoak, Michael Crowder, Ronny Lynn, Marie Kirk, Guy Fussell and Dottie Harden.  Board Member Mike Fordham, Attorney Frank Childs and Chaplain Rick Lanford were unable to attend.

President Gary Hill called the meeting to order.

Ocean Plaza Director of Sales Mary Pat Kloenne as well as several other personnel from the Ocean Plaza was at the meeting to help us with any last minute problems we had.  General Manger Juan Fernandez promised us we would have access to all the ice needed.  Passes will also be provided for cars not staying at the Ocean Plaza so that they would not run the risk of being towed.

Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson gave the invocation.

Jimmy Jones made a motion, which was seconded by Thomas Alley and passed to approve the minutes from July, 2006.  The financial report from July, 2006 was approved upon a motion from Jimmy Jones and a second from Homer Bryson.  The motion passed.

Secretary-Treasurer John Conley called the attention of the Board to the fact that the auditor had pointed out that the banks where we have the c.d.’s each have a balance of over $100,000.00 in them.  This enabled them to earn more interest but at the same time meant that FDIC only insured $100,000.00.  The Board decided they would rather earn the higher interest and review the situation next year.

Chatham County Sheriff Al St. Lawrence has been so cooperative with the office in providing help for the convention.  Deputies Tommy Smoak and Michael Crowder have gone above and beyond the call of duty in helping us.  Transportation to and from the golf course, pistol range and the ladies auxiliary’s trip to and from River Street was discussed and set up with the deputies.

The fact of another member committing a felony had been brought to the attention of the office.  John Conley made a motion to permanently remove this member from the membership rolls.  This motion was seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed.

Securing typewriters for each convention has become more and more difficult.  Marion Conley had found rebuilt IBM Wheelwriter III typewriters at a price of $265 each.

A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by John Conley and passed to purchase

four of these typewriters.  This should eliminate our need of “borrowing” typewriters for the convention in the future.

A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Homer Bryson and passed to make Steve Scheer an Honorary Life Member in the Association.

Secretary John Conley brought before the Committee the fact of how expensive it it to “move” the office each year for convention purposes.  We have to rent a U-Haul truck in addition to using our vehicles.  Sheriff Benny DeLoach of Appling County had volunteered to help him secure cheaper rates on building a trailer since trailers were built in Appling County.  The Committee authorized him to spend up to $2,000 for a trailer to haul the office goods.  A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Homer Bryson and passed authorizing Secretary Conley to purchase this closed-in trailer.

All in attendance at the meeting were made aware of the sad news that Board Member Mike Fordham would be unable to run for office again.  Mike has returned from Iraq but is now attending the resident Command and General Staff Officer Course Class 2007-01.  Mike was wished the very best from the Committee but has truly been missed by all.

President Gary Hill expressed appreciation again to Chatham County Sheriff Al St. Lawrence, Deputies Tommy Smoak and Michael Crowder.  The 2006 convention at Tybee Island would have been extremely difficult without the assistance of these gentlemen.

The next meeting was set for 5 P. M., September 16, 2006 at the Ocean Plaza Resort.
