POAG EXECUTIVE MINUTES
- APRIL 2008:
The Executive Committee of the Peace Officers’
Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10 A. M., April 15, 2008
at Travel Lodge, 5000 Harrison Road, Macon, Georgia. Committee members
attending included President Jimmy Jones, Board Members Mike Jones and
Thomas Alley, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley and Executive Director
Marion Conley, Attorney Frank Childs and Chaplain Rick Lanford. Vice
President Keith Glass and Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson were unable
to attend. Former POAG president Mickey Pearce, Donna Holcomb, Billy Ray
Blocker and Dottie Harden were visitors.
President Jimmy Jones called the meeting to order.
Chaplain Rick Lanford read a passage from Lamentations prior to giving
the invocation.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Board Member Thomas Alley.
A motion was made by Thomas Alley, seconded by Mike Jones and passed to
approve the minutes from March, 2008. A motion was made by Mike Jones,
seconded by Thomas Alley and passed to approve the financial reports
from March, 2008.
The Committee discussed the convention. Marion Conley passed the
training convention schedule out with the times of the classes posted.
Mike Jones reported he had acquired an average price of $9.50 for each
person, each meal Tuesday lunch and Tuesday night. Tuesday lunch would
consist of barbeque pork and chicken, stew, slaw, tea and water and
bread. Tuesday night’s meals would consist of hamburger and trimmings,
sausage wrapped in red rind cheese, wings and tea and water. This price
was from Good to Go Take Out and Catering. John Conley had secured a
price of $9.00 for a noon meal of pork, chicken, potato salad, Brunswick
stew, bread, pickles, and chewy cake and $6.00 for a night meal from
Harry’s Barbeque in Hagan. This meal would consist of hamburgers, hot
dogs, chips and condiments. John Conley had also secured prices from
McDaniel Supply Company in Jesup for Tuesday lunch for a meal of half
grilled chicken, baked beans, carrot raisin salad, bread and tea at a
cost of $7 and Tuesday night meal would cost $6.75 for barbeque pork and
pork ribs, potato salad, coleslaw, corn on the cob, bun or bread, pickle
spear, can drink or bottle water. A motion was made by John Conley,
seconded by Thomas Alley and passed to use McDaniel Supply Company to
cater the Tuesday meals for the convention.
Secretary Conley discussed a member’s expired membership. The member had
sent a check, ordered a shirt but did not state a size before the
expiration date. The check and application was returned to the member
asking for the size of the shirt. Before the documents could be returned
to the office, the member died, membership having expired. John Conley
made a motion to pay the benefits, Mike Jones seconded the motion and
the motion passed.
Marion Conley had e-mailed the Executive Committee an e-mail received
from Excelsior College of no one having taken advantage of the
tremendous discount of the online college courses. Chief Keith Glass
volunteered to be the first one. Hopefully, some of our members will
follow suit.
Mickey Pearce reported we had 45 participants in the golf tournament
held the previous day. This was good considering the weather.
Secretary Conley reported that we had some Alcohol Free Proms on the
same nights in various places. He needed help from the other Committee
members in attending these proms. The other members volunteered what
nights and places they could attend.
Secretary Conley reported that on March 27, 2008 $57,428.08 was invested
@ 8% for fifteen years. POAG would double their money in nine years.
However, J. JPMorgan could buy out this investment. This transaction was
handled by Mike Hoffman.
John Conley made a motion that no registration or training fee be
charged any of the chaplains that attend the convention; any of them may
eat or participate in any other of the activities without paying.
However, if the Chaplain wishes to participate in the drawing for door
prizes they must register and pay. Hopefully the Chaplains will wear
their Chaplain bullions so they can be readily identified. The motion
was seconded by Mike Jones and passed.
Ray Blocker talked to the Committee about a possible federal tax
deduction he has discovered for medically retired officers. Marion has
sent this to the POAG CPA for him to let us know his feelings about.
However, she felt it would be after April 15th before she would hear
from him. Ray also reported that SunTrust would donate $100 to your
favorite charity or give you a $50 Visa gift card for your own cause for
opening a new SunTrust personal or business checking account and
following a few guidelines. If interested, you could call the office.
The new account must be opened by June 30, 2008.
The May meeting will be set up later. |
