POAG EXECUTIVE MINUTES - APRIL 2005:

The Executive Committee of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10:30 A. M., April 12, 2005, Villager Lodge and Conference Center, Macon, Georgia.   Committee members attending included Vice President Gary W. Hill, Board Members Jimmy Jones and Mike Fordham,  Secretary-Treasurer John Conley, Attorney Frank Childs, Chaplain Rick Lanford and Executive Director Marion Conley.  President Keith Moran and Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson were unable to attend.  Visitors included: Thomas A. Alley, Shirley Fordham, Donna Holcomb, Ed Richards, Harry Colbert, Ken Suddeth, Mary Poole and Garry Moore.

Vice President Gary Hall called the meeting to order and welcomed all in attendance.

Chaplain Rick Lanford gave a brief Scripture reading and the invocation.  He reported that either Chaplain Greg Loskoski or Chaplain Monsignor Donald Kiernan will preach the sermon on Sunday night at the convention.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vice President Hill.

A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded Mike Fordham and passed to approve the minutes from March, 2005.  Marion Conley reported the financial report for March was not available because the bank statement had not been received from Minneapolis on the fundraising effort.

It was reported the investigation into the tragic slayings in Atlanta had not been completed by the Atlanta Police Department; thus, no decision was made on awarding the lady in Gwinnett County any type of honor.

Vice President Hill reminded all that the deadline for the convention issue of “The Georgia Peace Officer” is May 27, 2005.

A sick and vacation time for POAG employees was discussed.  A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by John Conley and passed to have 1 ¼ days a month sick leave, 1 ¼ days a month vacation days up to ten years service, 1 ½ days a month vacation days for ten-fifteen years service and 1 ¾ days a month vacation days after fifteen years service.

The prior membership campaign of paying $3 each for 50 members, $4 each for 75 members and $5 each for 100 members plus two nights free lodging at the annual convention was brought before the Committee by Vice President Hill.  A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Mike Fordham and passed to make this benefit only apply to dues paying members (not signing new Academy graduates) and to exclude the Executive Committee from this membership drive contest.

The office had been contacted about a possible fringe benefit for our membership from GE Mortgage – Genworth Financial out of Raleigh, North Carolina.  Jimmy Jones made a motion for President Keith Moran to run an investigation on this company, the office acquire some names of organizations that have used this service and get Mr. John Terry who contacted the office with the plan to come in person to present the plan.  John Conley seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

Vice President Gary Hill reported he, John Conley and Jimmy Jones had gone to Valdosta to a Georgia/Florida troopers charity softball game and golf tournament.  POAG had sponsored a hospitality room, at no cost to the Association.  Many new friends were made and hopefully new memberships will be forthcoming.

The convention program was gone over with necessary changes being made.  The Committee decided to allow Representative Sid Roberts with the Georgia Sheriff’s Association to sell raffle tickets on a Harley.  There will be no charge for a vendor space.

Proceeds will go to the Youth Homes.

Secretary Conley reported no alcohol related incidents had been reported thus far on “Alcohol Free Prom Night” for Tattnall County High School.

Ladies Auxiliary President Mary Poole requested payment for the ladies to take a 90 minute Jekyll Island Museum tour on Tuesday afternoon of the convention at 2 P. M.  A motion was made by John Conley, seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed to pay this fee.  Mrs. Poole also requested $250 to purchase gifts for the ladies.  Mike Fordham made a motion to approve this expenditure.  This motion was seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed.

Secretary Conley reported to the Committee the numerous problems we have had with the Pitney Bowes postage machine.  As a last alternative and pending legal advice from Frank Childs a motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Mike Fordham and passed authorizing John Conley to handle this problem with Pitney Bowes to the satisfaction of POAG, even if it meant breaking the lease contract.

The May meeting was called for Thursday, May 26, 2005, 10 A. M. at the home of Morgan and Joyce Key, 3448 Salem Cove Trail, Conyers, Georgia 30013.  A map is enclosed.

A motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Mike Fordham to adjourn.  Accordingly, the meeting was adjourned.
