POAG EXECUTIVE MINUTES
- APRIL 2005:
The Executive Committee of
the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10:30 A.
M., April 12, 2005, Villager Lodge and Conference Center, Macon, Georgia.
Committee members attending included Vice President Gary W. Hill, Board
Members Jimmy Jones and Mike Fordham, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley,
Attorney Frank Childs, Chaplain Rick Lanford and Executive Director Marion
Conley. President Keith Moran and Legislative Chairman Homer Bryson were
unable to attend. Visitors included: Thomas A. Alley, Shirley Fordham,
Donna Holcomb, Ed Richards, Harry Colbert, Ken Suddeth, Mary Poole and Garry
Moore.
Vice President
Gary Hall called the meeting to order and welcomed all in attendance.
Chaplain Rick
Lanford gave a brief Scripture reading and the invocation. He reported that
either Chaplain Greg Loskoski or Chaplain Monsignor Donald Kiernan will
preach the sermon on Sunday night at the convention.
The Pledge of
Allegiance was led by Vice President Hill.
A motion was
made by Jimmy Jones, seconded Mike Fordham and passed to approve the minutes
from March, 2005. Marion Conley reported the financial report for March was
not available because the bank statement had not been received from
Minneapolis on the fundraising effort.
It was
reported the investigation into the tragic slayings in Atlanta had not been
completed by the Atlanta Police Department; thus, no decision was made on
awarding the lady in Gwinnett County any type of honor.
Vice President
Hill reminded all that the deadline for the convention issue of “The Georgia
Peace Officer” is May 27, 2005.
A sick and
vacation time for POAG employees was discussed. A motion was made by Jimmy
Jones, seconded by John Conley and passed to have 1 ¼ days a month sick
leave, 1 ¼ days a month vacation days up to ten years service, 1 ½ days a
month vacation days for ten-fifteen years service and 1 ¾ days a month
vacation days after fifteen years service.
The prior
membership campaign of paying $3 each for 50 members, $4 each for 75 members
and $5 each for 100 members plus two nights free lodging at the annual
convention was brought before the Committee by Vice President Hill. A
motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Mike Fordham and passed to make
this benefit only apply to dues paying members (not signing new Academy
graduates) and to exclude the Executive Committee from this membership drive
contest.
The office had been
contacted about a possible fringe benefit for our membership from GE
Mortgage – Genworth Financial out of Raleigh, North Carolina. Jimmy Jones
made a motion for President Keith Moran to run an investigation on this
company, the office acquire some names of organizations that have used this
service and get Mr. John Terry who contacted the office with the plan to
come in person to present the plan. John Conley seconded the motion. The
motion passed.
Vice President Gary Hill
reported he, John Conley and Jimmy Jones had gone to Valdosta to a
Georgia/Florida troopers charity softball game and golf tournament. POAG
had sponsored a hospitality room, at no cost to the Association. Many new
friends were made and hopefully new memberships will be forthcoming.
The convention program was
gone over with necessary changes being made. The Committee decided to allow
Representative Sid Roberts with the Georgia Sheriff’s Association to sell
raffle tickets on a Harley. There will be no charge for a vendor space.
Proceeds will go to the Youth Homes.
Secretary Conley reported no
alcohol related incidents had been reported thus far on “Alcohol Free Prom
Night” for Tattnall County High School.
Ladies Auxiliary President
Mary Poole requested payment for the ladies to take a 90 minute Jekyll
Island Museum tour on Tuesday afternoon of the convention at 2 P. M. A
motion was made by John Conley, seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed to pay
this fee. Mrs. Poole also requested $250 to purchase gifts for the ladies.
Mike Fordham made a motion to approve this expenditure. This motion was
seconded by Jimmy Jones and passed.
Secretary Conley reported to
the Committee the numerous problems we have had with the Pitney Bowes
postage machine. As a last alternative and pending legal advice from Frank
Childs a motion was made by Jimmy Jones, seconded by Mike Fordham and passed
authorizing John Conley to handle this problem with Pitney Bowes to the
satisfaction of POAG, even if it meant breaking the lease contract.
The May meeting was called
for Thursday, May 26, 2005, 10 A. M. at the home of Morgan and Joyce Key,
3448 Salem Cove Trail, Conyers, Georgia 30013. A map is enclosed.
A motion was made by Jimmy
Jones, seconded by Mike Fordham to adjourn. Accordingly, the meeting was
adjourned. |
