The
Executive Committee of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia, Inc.
held a meeting at 10 A. M., April 8, 2003, at the Ramada Inn, Macon,
Georgia. Committee members attending included President Harry Colbert,
III, Vice President Homer Bryson, Board Members Keith Moran and Gary Hill,
Secretary-Treasurer John Conley, Legislative Chairman Bob Brown,
Attorney Frank Childs and Executive Director Marion Conley. Chaplain Jimmy
Waters was unable to attend. Visitors included Ken Suddeth, Jimmy Jones
and Donna Holcomb.
The meeting
was called to order and a welcome given all in attendance by President
Colbert. Board Member Keith Moran gave the invocation.
The minutes
from March, 2003 were approved upon a motion from Bob Brown. The motion
was seconded by Keith Moran and passed. Marion Conley stated there was no
financial report for March, 2003 yet awaiting a bank statement on the
fundraising project from Minnesota.
Attorney
Frank Childs went over the criteria and application for the Jimmy Waters
Scholarship fund. The papers Attorney Childs prepared were satisfactory
to the Committee. A motion was made by Bob Brown, seconded by Gary Hill
and passed to accept this criteria and application.
The
Universal Connect program was further discussed with all being in
agreement POAG would endorse and try to pass the message of this program
along to our membership. Homer Bryson will try to get a sheriff to try
the program free of charge for a period of time deemed necessary by the
sheriff.
Gary Hill
was given authority to converse with Bill Thomas of Big Bad Barbeque and
sign whatever papers Mr. Thomas may desire. Mr. Thomas will need two
rooms Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights of the convention in appreciation
of the low priced meal.
President
Colbert has invited Greg Cape for a karaoke Tuesday night for a fee of
$500.00 with no rooms. The pistol match will be held at the Glynn County
range on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 beginning at 8 A. M. The fun run is
again scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 5:30 P. M.
Secretary-Treasurer Conley reminded all we needed door prizes. President
Colbert volunteered to attempt to get a gun donated. Board Member Keith
Moran reminded all that Fussell Bonding has given a gun. Keith also
discussed the fun run with the Blue Knights of Ga. VIII being planned for
Saturday.
President
Colbert will have the awarding of “Life Memberships” on the agenda for the
May meeting.
Board Member Homer Bryson
had communicated with Chief T. C. Cowan with Brunswick Police Department
and communicated a need of the Ladies Auxiliary for transportation to the
mall. Chief Cowan graciously agreed to make a 20-person mini bus
available to the ladies.
President Colbert relayed
to the Committee that DNR Sgt. Jason Nelms of the Floyd District. Sgt.
Nelms will replace retired Chief Willie Mitchell who has served the
Association so well for many years.
Legislative Chairman Bob
Brown volunteered to contact Steve White about coming to the convention
again this year. Steve has the “Shoot, Don’t Shoot” machine.
Board Member Gary Hill
discussed a situation involving a potential Officer of the Year nominee.
The supervisor did not want to nominate the individual until the case has
been adjudicated in court. The supervisor felt reasonably sure this event
would not occur prior to June 30th this year, thus throwing the
situation into another fiscal year. The Committee agreed to consider this
officer in the year the supervisor felt comfortable nominating same.
Legislative Chairman Bob
Brown proudly informed the Committee that Director of Homeland Security
and Past President Bill Hitchens was secretary-treasurer of POST Council.
President Colbert was
happy to tell the Committee that John McCall with Macon Communications had
sponsored the golf tournament the previous day with an $800.00 check. In
spite of the inclement weather, four golfers had finished 18 holes of
golf. It was decided to give each of these golfers $60 each.
The May meeting was set
for May 9, 2003, 4 P.M., Jekyll Inn, Jekyll Island.
John Conley made a motion
to adjourn. This motion was seconded by Homer Bryson and passed.
