The Executive
Committee of the Peace Officers’ Association of
Georgia, Inc. held a meeting at 10 A. M., April 9,
2002, Ramada Inn, Macon, Georgia. The Executive
Committee meeting followed a meeting held at 9 A. M.
with the Miller Committee. Committee members
attending included President Wayne Avery, Vice
President Harry Colbert, Board Members Homer Bryson
and Keith Moran, Secretary-Treasurer John Conley,
Attorney Frank Childs and Executive Director Marion
Conley. Legislative Chairman Bob Brown, Public
Relations Director Ken Suddeth and Chaplain Jimmy
Waters were unable to attend. Visitors included:
Sammy Murphy, Mickey Pearce, Joyce and Morgan Key,
Donna Holcomb, and Mary Poole.
The meeting was called to order and a
welcome given to all in attendance by President
Wayne Avery.
Board Member Homer Bryson gave the
invocation.
President Avery led the Pledge of
Allegiance.
A motion was made by Keith Moran,
seconded by Homer Bryson and passed to approve the
minutes and financial report from March, 2002.
President Avery reported that he and
Harry Colbert would be going to Callan Publishing in
Minneapolis, Minnesota May 10, 11, and 12th
to see the site of Callan Publishing and its
subsidiaries. The trip will be at the expense of
Callan Publishing.
Attorney Frank Childs gave a review
of his communications with Mike Callan and the
contract relating to the residential fund raising
program. Frank reported that Mike is concerned
about the Federal Trade Commission Proposed Rule –
National Do-Not-Call Registry. This was the largest
challenge facing him, as it would affect charitable
organizations. Mike felt he could possibly loose
the right to call about 40% of the potential
people. If the Federal Trade Commission was
successful in their proposal to amend the
telemarketing sales rule Callan would not want to
include a guaranteed minimum payment sum in the
contract. Attorney Childs relayed he had mentioned
to Mike that there was already a provision whereby
the contract could be canceled in the event revenue
was not to his satisfaction. Board Member Keith
Moran interjected that the Georgia Sheriff’s
Association was against telemarketing, not POAG but
definitely telemarketing. A discussion ensued by
the Committee on personally meeting with many
sheriffs and explaining our position to them.
The idea of being able to continue
working and drawing POAB after 30 years that was
initiated by POAG many years ago has now become
reality. The bill is awaiting the governor’s
signature and the employee will not even have to
retire to be able to draw their retirement.
Vice
President Harry Colbert reported a successful
Westside High School prom night in connection with
the POAG and Miller Brewing campaign against
underage drinking. Many activities were
successfully carried out by Westside High School
such as a wrecked car that had been involved in a
DUI accident being parked at the school, black
t-shirts, painted faces etc. as well as much media
coverage. Wayne Avery reported there were no teen
arrests or accidents prom night in the City of
Macon. There continue to be ongoing activities in
Bibb County relating to underage drinking.
Mrs.
Poole, Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary had
come to the meeting to present the Association
another book of POAG history.
John
Conley made a motion, which was seconded by Harry
Colbert to extend the membership of a person
re-entering the military for a maximum two-year
period. This motion passed.
Marion Conley will attempt to begin putting a list
of all new members who are joining for the first
time in the magazine.
The
May meeting was set for May 16th at 3 P.
M. in Helen, Georgia. The location will be
determined after President Avery converses with Mr.
W. R. Harber.
The
Committee was reminded of the serious condition of
Chaplain Jimmy Waters.
A
motion was made by Keith Moran and seconded by Homer
Bryson to adjourn. 7Accordingly, the meeting was
adjourned. |
